Crews search for missing 18-year-old swimmer in Potomac River

Witnesses say a group was swimming when the 18-year-old fell underwater and did not come back up.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Rescue crews are searching for an 18-year-old swimmer who went underwater in the Potomac River but did not return Friday evening.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, crews were called to the Potomac River near the Anglers Inn River Access for reports of a missing swimmer just before 8:45 p.m.

When crews arrived, a witness told them a group of people were swimming from the Virginia side of the river to the Maryland side, when one of the swimmers fell underwater and never came back up.

The swimmer was only identified as an 18-year-old man.

MCFR is receiving assistance from the U.S. Park Police and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue in the search for the swimmer.
