Crews battle 4-alarm fire at Oakland lumberyard

OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland firefighters say they are making good progress on a 4-alarm fire at a lumber yard that was first reported around 7:45 p.m. Sunday and required at least 75 firefighters.

The fire generated intense heat and smoke, but no one was injured, according to an Oakland Fire spokesperson.

The fire at Economy Lumber at 750 High St. became a 2-alarm fire around 8 p.m., then quickly grew to a 4-alarm fire at 8:15 p.m., according to Michael Hunt of Oakland Fire.

Upon arrival, teams were met with heavy fire towards the main building where it quickly established itself, posing a challenge and requiring more teams.

People are asked to avoid the area, especially vehicles near Interstate Highway 880 near High Street, according to Hunt. Firefighters also suggest area residents keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering homes. Hunt said the Bay Area Air Quality Management District was called in to determine air quality in the area.

Rail traffic near the site was disrupted in both directions, according to Oakland Fire, and traffic in the area was affected.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
