Crash on Florida Turnpike in southwest Miami-Dade causes fuel truck to overturn, prompting rush-hour backups – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – Florida Highway Patrol troopers reopened all but two northbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike in southwest Miami-Dade after a fuel truck overturned in the middle of traffic at the rush hours.

FHP and Miami-Dade emergency units responded to the Turnpike Extension near Kendall Drive and Sunset Drive Friday afternoon.

According to FHP, two SUVs collided, causing the tanker truck to overturn.

“The tanker truck is overturned versus a gray pickup truck and a white Chevy,” a dispatcher said.

7SkyForce hovered over the overturned truck.

Closing the highway for several hours led to miles of backups for commuters and police trying to divert traffic to the side of the road.

Some drivers, cleared by FHP troopers, were seen making U-turns in the northbound lanes in an attempt to reach the Kendall Drive exit ramp.

Officers were able to identify the driver of the truck and speak with him.

According to firefighters, 11 people were inspected on site due to minor injuries, but no one was evacuated.

Crews were able to clean up large amounts of fuel spilled from the truck, which normally carries about 3,100 gallons.

After hours of cleaning, crews righted the truck and towed it away.
