Cambridge Police announce arrest in ongoing investigation into double shooting in Donnelly Field area

A suspect accused in connection with a May 23, 2024, double shooting in the Donnelly Field neighborhood was arrested.

Yonayvi Cruceta, 23, of Cambridge, was arrested in Cambridge after Cambridge Police detectives identified him as being involved in last week's shooting in Cambridge. Cruceta is charged in Cambridge District Court with the following charges:

  • Assault and attempted battery with a firearm
  • Carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds
  • Discharge of firearm within 500 feet of a building
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm Without a License
  • Carrying a firearm without a license

On Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 9:39 p.m., Cambridge Police responded to Donnelly Field, located at 91 Berkshire Street, following reports of multiple shots fired. The preliminary investigation indicates that the defendant was on the basketball court when he was approached by several individuals. After a brief interaction, an exchange of gunfire took place. During this exchange, the accused allegedly discharged a firearm and was also shot by one of these individuals. A victim, a 22-year-old woman, was also found on the basketball court, suffering from a gunshot wound believed to have come from a stray bullet fired by one of the unknown men.

THE shooting victims were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both individuals are residents of Cambridge. No other injuries were reported.

Cambridge Police do not believe this incident was random. To help provide more information, the offices of Mayor E. Denise Simmons, City Manager Yi-An Huang and Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow are inviting the public to attend a community safety meeting scheduled for Thursday May 30, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. pm The meeting will be held at St. Anthony Parish, 400 Cardinal Medeiros Ave, in Cambridge.

This is an opportunity for Cambridge Police to share what they can with the community, for residents to ask questions and share their concerns, and for everyone to come together to determine what steps to take to reduce the risk of violence in our city. All members of the public are invited to attend.
