Auburn running back Brian Battie could find himself permanently paralyzed after being shot on May 18.

Battie remains hospitalized following the shooting that killed his brother Tommie, 24, and injured three others. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said in a court filing a week ago that Battie faced permanent paralysis after the shooting.

According to a probable cause affidavit from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, the Batties were walking in the area when Darryl Brookins pulled out a gun and shot them. Both fought back. In court documents, authorities accuse Brookins of firing approximately 12 or 13 shots within a few feet. At the time, approximately 200 people were in or near the parking lot.

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze said Tuesday during the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla., that Battie “seems to be getting better every day.”

Freeze previously said Battie was on a ventilator in the hospital. Brookins was arrested and already charged in connection with the shooting. He faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Battie transferred to Auburn ahead of the 2023 season from South Florida and was the Tigers' primary kick returner a season ago. He had 51 carries for 227 yards and a touchdown in 2023 and returned 28 kickoffs for 645 yards.

The Sarasota native spent the first three seasons of his career in South Florida and rushed for more than 1,800 yards. He totaled 1,185 yards and eight touchdowns as the team's leading rusher in 2022.
