County approves more traffic stops near new Costco in northwest Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – With just one month until the new Costco at 180th Street and West Maple Road opens, Douglas County Commissioners unanimously approved plans to add more street signs to the area .

“There have been comments from citizens and also from Costco, the city and county administrators that certain types of calming devices help in some way to ease traffic flow there,” the commissioner said of Douglas County, Mike Friend.

Tuesday's decision stemmed from concerns about a planned Costco entrance at 117th Avenue and Emmet Street.

To help with traffic flow, the county has installed “Stop” and “Keep Right” signs on 177th, 178th, 179th and 180th Avenues along Emmet Street.

A friend told 6 News they heard from other existing Costco locations that traffic was a problem.

“We want to make sure that the flow is consistent and predictable and that there are no unintended consequences of that flow,” he said.

Friend said a neighborhood entrance is still needed for connectivity reasons. He's also confident the signs won't slow down progress before the opening date.

“They keep laying concrete and widening things,” Friend said. “There are a lot of things that need to happen over the next month and they are working diligently to get those things accomplished.”

The municipality plans to start road inspection work in the coming weeks.
