Coronation Street to welcome DS Swain's teenage daughter

Coronation Street star Vicky Myers has confirmed DS Swain's daughter will discover the soap later this year.

Show bosses plan to reveal more about Swain, who is currently taking center stage in the story of Lauren Bolton's disappearance.

Last month it was confirmed that the Weatherfield detective had been promoted to regular character after almost three years as a guest star.

In a new interview with TV Times, Vicky revealed: “She's a single mother and a lot of people can relate to that.

“We're casting her 16-year-old daughter, and I think it's fair to say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree – she's feisty, opinionated and knowledgeable.

“It's going to be interesting to see Swain juggle her professional and personal life. Plus, we know she's gay, so is there another mother and, if so, is she involved?”

Regarding the decision to accept a permanent role on Corrie, Vicky also shared: “I was coming to the end of my contract last October after being involved in the Stephen Reid storyline. There were questions about what we were going to do with Swain, and [then-producer] Iain MacLeod said: “We need a discussion.”

“There were different pitches, a few that I thought would be creatively challenging and create interesting stories, so it was a no-brainer.”

Swain recently investigated the mystery of Lauren's disappearance and publicly shared his theory that the teen was murdered.

Lauren's former boss, Roy Cropper, is currently the prime suspect in the case. Despite protests from friends and neighbors claiming Roy is harmless, future episodes will see him charged and sent to prison on remand ahead of a scheduled trial.

Daniel Osbourne was also identified by Swain as a possible suspect – another part of the storyline that will be revisited in the coming weeks.

Coronation Street is broadcast Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and broadcast on ITVX.
