Cops look into triple 0 after suspected murder

A nearly hour-long delay in police response to a triple 0 call will be part of a “critical incident” investigation after a woman was found dead in a small NSW town early on Saturday morning.

NSW Police went to an address in Casino, about 720km north of Sydney, at 2.27am for a welfare check, finding a woman in her 40s years unconscious with head injuries.

Police called an ambulance, but her condition deteriorated and she died at the scene.

Police have charged a 31-year-old man with the murder and confirmed the man and woman were a couple.

NSW Police Northern Region Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said a triple 0 call was made to police shortly after 1.30am, but police did not acknowledge the call only at 2:25 in the morning.

“It concerned me enough to ask for an independent review… what the delay was and whether it was justified or not,” he said Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m.

A critical incident review involves external investigators to assess how the police responded to an incident and whether there were any failings in the response.

A team from Byron Police District will review the response and the Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review, police said.

The level of priority given to the appeal will form part of the investigation, Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said.

The responding officers were in a nearby area when they responded to the call at 2:25 a.m., the deputy commissioner added.

It is not clear where or from whom the triple 0 call was made.

A crime scene has been established. The State Homicide Squad is investigating along with Richmond officers.

It is the second suspected DV murder to hit NSW in just two days after a woman was found dead in Sydney's west on Thursday, allegedly at the hands of a housemate.

Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said police do not “tolerate” domestic violence.

“We take domestic violence very seriously,” he said.

“We will not tolerate domestic violence in any form. »
