Copenhagen activists set up encampments, demand government stop selling arms to Israel

Prague, Czech Republic

Since last week, pro-Palestinian activists have set up a number of tent camps in central Copenhagen, demanding that the Danish government stop selling arms to Israel.

The group behind the encampment in the City Hall Square area, called Palestine Square – Arms Embargo Encampment, said in a statement: “When the International Court of Justice declares that there is probably a genocide in Gaza, Denmark should do the absolute minimum. is to stop all arms trade with the State of Israel. »

They said they would not leave the camp until their demands were met by the government.

The group said on social media: “The camp is founded on one fundamental demand: that the Danish state impose a complete arms embargo on the State of Israel, to end Danish complicity in the genocide in course in Gaza as well as in the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. Historic Palestine. He adds: “While Danish companies such as Terma Group and others have contributed to the F-35 fighter jet program, other Danish companies have supplied anti-drone equipment to Israeli forces. »

“We demand a total arms embargo against the apartheid state as an absolute minimum as it commits genocidal acts in Gaza, the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem,” the group told Anadolu.

In April, four human rights groups filed a lawsuit against Denmark for failing to meet its legal obligations by allowing arms exports to Israel.

Amnesty International Denmark, Oxfam Denmark, Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke and the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq filed a complaint against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Danish National Police.

The groups said Danish weapons parts and other military hardware exported to Israel are currently being used to commit possible war crimes and contribute to plausible genocide. The groups said: “This is contrary to the UN Arms Trade Treaty and the EU Common Rules on Arms Exports, which clearly state that member states are obliged to refuse arms exports if there is a clear risk that the parts will be used to violate international rules. law.”
