Construction underway at Cabarrus County intersection nearly six years after teen's death – Queen City News

CABARRUS COUNTY, NC (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — It’s been almost six years to the day since Brian Manring lost his life along the Old Salisbury-Concord Road in Cabarrus County, and work is underway to prevent future tragedies.

In December, NCDOT announced it would invest $1.1 million to develop a roundabout at the intersection of Old Salisbury-Concord and Irish Potato Road.

The roundabout would force vehicles to slow down and eliminate blind spots, which have proven deadly in the past.

In July 2018, Brian Manring died when he ran off the road in front of an 18-wheeler Irish Potato truck on Old Salisbury-Concord.

Shortly after his death, Brian's family has started a petition to fight for a red light to add at the intersection.

“I just want everyone to know that my son was a wonderful child. He didn't deserve this. I hope my fight will prevent another tragedy,” Robert Manring said.

NCDOT told Queen City News that it reported 28 crashes between 2013 and 2018, 10 of which appeared to be the result of vehicles pulling out in front of other vehicles.

In December 2023, NCDOT announced it would spend money to add a roundabout to the area.

Zachary Garner of NCDOT explained that “to go from a traffic light at an intersection to a roundabout… your conflict points go from 32 to a roundabout that has about eight.”

This means less risk of accidents.

June 3, NCDOT announced she had closed the intersection to begin the process of installing a roundabout.

The project will be completed by the end of July or the beginning of August.
