Construction begins on new Shady Grove fire station

JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – The Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department announced that work has begun on the county's new barn fire station thanks to Beat 1 Supervisor George Walters.

The current station has been in use since 1991.

The building has several problems: a leaking roof, rust along its lower edge, no air conditioning or heating, and insufficient storage space.

“We have so many fire trucks that we can't park them all at the station, which we think is a good thing because we can never have too much equipment to protect the community, and that's why we are here, it is to protect. the community and that’s why we want to build this new station,” said David Houston, Chief of the Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department.

Construction of the new station was planned last year, but problems with the supply pipeline delayed the project.

The new station will be able to store two fire engines and contain offices, storage rooms and bathrooms with showers.

“When we started years ago, we only had one fire truck and since then we have progressed to today,” Houston said.

Once completed, the VFD will use both stations for the time being.

The chief said the exterior of the new building could hopefully be finished within three to four weeks.
