Congress advances arms package for Israel – Presidential Prayer Team

Lawmakers who opposed the gun sale have now approved the sale.

Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, ranking member of the House Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, both endorsed one of the largest packages weapons ever offered to Israel. Earlier this year, each of the lawmakers opposed the $18 billion arms transfer, which includes 50 fighter jets and Joint Direct Attack Munitions.

Congressman Meeks said he was in “close contact” with the White House regarding the package and “repeatedly urged the administration to continue to push Israel to make meaningful and concrete improvements on all fronts in terms of humanitarian efforts and limiting civilian casualties.”

He said he remained supportive of Israel's right to defend itself against threats from Iran and Hezbollah.

Now that the bill has passed congressional committees, the proposed sale will now go to Congress for full approval. The arms deal, which will be delivered in about five years, is expected to be completed since federal lawmakers have generally supported Israel.

Under the direction of the Lord, pray with us…

  • For members of the House and Senate as they deliberate on the arms package for Israel.
  • For the wisdom of the President, his advisors, and federal officials as they assess America's weapons needs.
