Commercial Building Fire Reveals Illegal Apartment With 3 Unsupervised Children

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City firefighters responded to a fire at a commercial building, only to discover an illegal apartment upstairs with three children under the age of 10 left unattended.

Around 1:50 a.m. Saturday, KCFD was notified of a fire at a commercial building located at Truman Road and Park Avenue.

When crews arrived, they saw flames coming from the second floor and entered the building from the rear, quickly putting the fire under control.

While searching the building, firefighters discovered what looked like storage doors. When they opened them, an illegal apartment was discovered.

Three children aged 2, 4 and 9 were found unsupervised in the apartment. They were taken to Children's Mercy to be treated for smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide exposure. All three are said to be stable and being treated in hospital.

KCFD is investigating the cause of the fire and says carbon monoxide levels are between 300 and 400 parts per million, which is a fatal level with continued exposure. KCPD is working to find those responsible for the illegal apartment and the children left inside.
