Columbus Police: Officers fatally shoot suspect who accused them with a weapon

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A suspect who the Columbus Division of Police said was charging at people with a knife was fatally shot by police Monday evening.

According to Sgt. Joe Albert, police were called about a man charging at vehicles with a knife. Albert said several callers reported the man was in the middle of the street charging at people as they walked by.

When officers arrived, Albert said they found the suspect outside of a vehicle with what appeared to be a bladed weapon in his hand. Officers noticed the suspect was Hispanic, so Albert said they told him to show them his hands in English and Spanish. The suspect got into a car and left.

The police followed the suspect who was driving on Georgesville Road. Shortly after turning onto Sullivant Avenue, Albert said the suspect stopped his vehicle and got out with the gun in his hand. The officers asked the suspect to show them his hands in English and Spanish. He allegedly ignored the orders, got back into his vehicle and left.

The suspect drove to the intersection of Sullivant Avenue and Industrial Mile Road, where he allegedly got out of the car again with the gun in his hand and began walking toward oncoming traffic.

Albert said officers followed the suspect and one officer deployed his stun gun on him, but was unsuccessful. At that point, the suspect turned and allegedly charged the officers with the gun in his hand. Several officers fired their firearms, striking the suspect, according to Albert.

The suspect was transported to Doctors Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m. No officers were injured.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
