Colombia Memorial Day weekend shooting leaves one dead

COLUMBIA, La. (KNOE) – A man was arrested in Caldwell Parish over Memorial Day weekend after a shooting left one person dead.

The shooting happened in the 200 block of South Heights in Columbia on Sunday, May 26 around 5 p.m.

The initial investigation showed that a woman was arguing with the victim over money the woman was demanding to help care for the three children they have together.

Witnesses told detectives the woman asked the victim to leave, and the couple's older child also asked the victim to leave. The victim's father also told the victim it was time to leave because she was not wanted there, according to witnesses.

The woman told police that the victim cursed at her several times and that the woman's boyfriend came out of the bedroom with a gun when he heard this happening.

The boyfriend, Gary Edmonston, Jr., told the victim to leave. According to the arrest record, the victim charged down the hallway toward Edmonston, Jr. People at the scene told officers that is when the victim punched Edmonston in the head with his fist.

Arrest records show that Edmonston, Jr., then shot the victim in the abdomen and again in the right arm. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Officers said Edmonston was advised of his Miranda rights and later admitted to intentionally shooting the victim.

Edmonston was booked into the Caldwell Parish Correctional Center on one count of involuntary manslaughter.
