Club News: Elk's Lodge Awards Teen of the Year Certificates and Checks | The Arkansas Democratic Gazette

Orchid Society

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. today, June 23, at the Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. Membership is $10 per year.

Jyotsna Sharma, Ph.D. and graduate of the University of Alberta, will speak on orchid conservation. Members are asked to bring flowering plants for monthly judging.

The goal of the Orchid Society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their cultivation.

American Legion

Every Wednesday, the Legion hosts an all-you-can-eat lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the post, located at 1195 S. Curtis Ave. in Fayetteville. The meal costs $6 and includes beans, cornbread, dessert, coffee or tea.

Post 27 will host “Laugh Out Legion” from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 29. This comedy show will feature Aaron Scarbrough and Madi Stancic, both of Kansas City; Kyle Kordsmeier of Fayetteville; and Kenneth Crabgrass of Hogeye. The event will be hosted by Caleb Hickerson.

The Legion would like to remind the public to drop off old, tired and worn flags at the post anytime between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday or to call the post and leave a name and number and arrangements can be made to the pickup. The Legion will provide the dignified retirement that the flag deserves.

Scottish Society

The Scottish Society of NWA meets at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Golden Corral, 2605 W. Pleasant Crossing Drive in Rogers. Dinner is at 6 p.m.

The aim of the Scottish Society is to preserve Scottish heritage and culture.

Perfect harmony

Perfect Harmony Women's Barbershop Chorus in Bella Vista is looking for new members of all ages and voices to join the group. The choir is working on new songs. There are no tryouts and no prior musical experience is necessary to participate.

The choir meets every Monday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Highland Christian Church, 1500 Forest Hills Blvd. in Bella Vista.

Elk Lodge

A total of nine veterans from the Fayetteville Veterans Home participated in a veterans fishing tournament sponsored by the Fayetteville/Springdale Elks Lodge on June 14.

Volunteers from the Elks Lodge, Rogers VFW and Veterans Home staff contributed to the success of the event. The winners were: Donald Hale for most fish caught; Leslie Whitmore for largest fish caught; and Robert Harrell for smallest fish caught. Each of the winners received a medal. All veterans who participated received a snack bag containing a drink to take with them.

Elk Lodge

The Fayetteville/Springdale Elks Lodge recently awarded four students with Teen of the Year certificates and checks. Teachers and school staff selected a seventh or eighth grade student who excelled in academics, school activities, community activities and relationships with others.

Each student received a certificate and check from Marge Guist, president of Elk Americanism. The winners were Evan Curtis of Farmington Junior High; Lillian Hodgkinson of Woodland Junior High in Fayetteville; Mary Harriman of Central Junior High in Springdale; and Leon Frisard of Prairie Grove Junior High.

Sydney Lane is also pictured with Leon Frisard, who won first place in the State Elk Americanism Essay competition. She received a check and a certificate. His essay was presented in the national competition. The theme of the essay contest was “What the Bill of Rights Means to Me.”

Benton County Master Gardeners

The Benton County Master Gardeners will meet at 6 p.m. July 2 with a social time beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Bentonville Church of Christ Native Plant Lodge, 816 NW 8th Street, Bentonville and East open to the public. Knowledgeable members will be available during social times to troubleshoot technical issues, including recording business hours, sending photos, and keeping track of scheduled events.

Guest speaker Yannik Dwyer will discuss the Diana Project, which focuses on the Diana Fritillary butterfly, Arkansas' state butterfly, whose population is declining in the Ozarks.

Master Gardeners are volunteers trained in horticulture and share their training by participating in community projects such as landscaping the Centerton Municipal Building. For more information, visit their website at home.bentoncountygardening.org.

NWA-Mensa

The local Mensa chapter holds its members and pre-qualified prospective members who meet only at 10 a.m. on the first Saturday of the month at Einstein Brothers Bagels, 1500 N. College in Fayetteville.

The chapter holds its Mensa Food, Fun & Games meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. at Taziki's Mediterranean Grill, 95 E. Joyce Blvd. in Fayetteville. The meeting is open to pre-qualified members, friends, family and prospective members.

The Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America recently participated in a “Fun Shoot” with the Fort Smith MOAA Chapter. Four members of the Northwest Arkansas chapter traveled to Van Buren to participate in the annual pistol shooting at the Crawford County Sheriff's Range. Nearly 15 shooters were present, with excellent control of the range and excellent security provided by Brad Wiley, Chief Deputy of the Crawford County Sheriff's Department.
