Cleveland woman faces new charges in stabbing of 3-year-old boy in North Olmsted

A 32-year-old Cleveland woman accused of fatally stabbing a 3-year-old boy and injuring his 38-year-old mother in the attack faces more crimes as a Cuyahoga County grand jury returns the indictments on June 5, according to a news release from the North Olmsted Police Department.

The incident happened June 3 in the parking lot of Giant Eagle, 27264 Lorain Road in North Olmsted.

Bionca Ellis, who was previously charged with aggravated murder in the death of Julian Wood of North Olmsted, faces two additional counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and a single count of attempted murder. murder, child endangerment, tampering with evidence and theft.

There will be no preliminary hearing on June 10 in Rocky River Municipal Court.

Prosecutors will formally dismiss the case in Rocky River Municipal Court, with Cuyahoga County now the proper court, police said.

Ellis stole two knives from the Volunteers of America thrift store next to the Giant Eagle near Lorain Road and Dover Center Road in North Olmsted, authorities said.

After getting the knife, she walked towards the giant eagle.

As Ellis entered the Giant Eagle, she spotted the victim and her 3-year-old son exiting the store.

Ellis followed them to the parking lot and immediately stabbed the 3-year-old, who was in the shopping cart, multiple times, police said.

The boy's mother tried to get him out and was also stabbed, investigators said.

At 3:03 p.m., North Olmsted Police Dispatch received several 911 calls reporting a black woman dressed in black was stabbing people in the Giant Eagle parking lot, according to authorities.

Officers arrived and located Ellis walking toward Dover Center Road, still carrying the kitchen knife used in the attack, police said.

Ellis was arrested without resistance and transported to North Olmsted Jail.

Paramedics transported the boy and his mother to St. John's University Hospital Medical Center in Westlake.

However, the boy died from his injuries.

His mother was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

The motive for the attack is not known, but everything we have learned so far indicates that it was a random act of violence, the statement said.

Ellis is known to the North Olmsted Police Department for a prior theft offense, but has no known violent criminal history, the release states.

North Olmsted police released videos and 911 calls during a June 4 press conference following the incident.

Authorities say one of the videos shows Ellis waving a knife.
