OPD investigating shooting with multiple injuries

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating a shooting involving multiple victims. The incident occurred shortly after 8:45 p.m. on June 19, 2024, in the 400 block of Grand Avenue.

The preliminary investigation revealed that 28 officers and four sergeants were monitoring crowds of approximately 5,000 people attending events on and around Lake Merritt. The crowd was quiet until about 8:15 p.m., when an illegal spectacle involving vehicles and motorcycles took place near Grand Avenue and Bellevue Avenue. Shortly after, a fight broke out and as the crowd moved toward the altercation, several shots were fired. Police located several victims affected by the gunfire.

Medical personnel transported several victims to an area hospital. Other victims were transported to various hospitals by private transport. At this time, no deaths have been reported and the exact number of injuries is still under investigation. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. It is currently unknown whether there was a single shooter or multiple shooters involved.

After the shooting, officers attempted to guide the crowd to a safe area. During this effort, some individuals in the crowd hit and shoved the police officers, slightly injuring them. A person was taken into custody for assaulting a police officer.

The events were not permitted gatherings.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPD Felony Assault Unit at (510) 238-3426. If you have videos or photos that could help with the investigation, please send them to [email protected].
