City hit by second alleged threat in center

Police have arrested six youths for allegedly threatening a man outside an Adelaide shopping centre, just two days after the Westfield Marion center was closed following an alleged unrelated fight between youths.

The incident happened on Tuesday at around 1:30 p.m. Police were called to the center of Arndale, about 10km northwest of the CBD, following reports that a group of youths had threatened a man.

“Two of the youths were believed to be carrying knives at the time,” South African police said on Tuesday afternoon.

“The group quickly dispersed but were located by Western District patrols on Humphries Terrace. Police recovered the knives involved.

“Six young people were arrested and are being questioned by police and are expected to be charged with aggravated affray.

“One of the young people also threw a stone, hitting a person in the chin and causing a minor injury. »

Four of the boys are 14, one is 16 and the other is 13, police said.

The incident comes just two days after Sunday's chaos at Westfield Marion, in which an unrelated alleged fight between young people in the food court over a $285 sweater sparked a lockdown and massive response of the police.

Alarms sounded throughout the center and main storefronts locked their doors to ensure the safety of shoppers.

Heavily armed specialist tactical officers stormed the center and scoured it throughout the afternoon for the suspected perpetrators. Police announced arrests Monday morning.

Two of the three boys, aged 15 and 16, appeared at Adelaide Youth Court this morning, charged with affray, robbery by force and assault.

In documents viewed by NewsWire, prosecutors say two of the boys attempted to steal a sweater worth $285.

“On June 23, 2024, at Oaklands Park in the said State, (the teenagers) committed a robbery by using force or threatening to use force… in order to commit a theft by taking a sweater worth $285…and force was used, or threat was made, at the time of or immediately before or after the robbery,” the document states.

It is understood that the sweater was a Track Star hoodie.

Bail applications for the three teenagers were adjourned due to court-ordered reports.

The teenagers have been remanded in custody and will appear in court again on July 4.
