Citrus County Fire Department Captain Dies in July 4 Boating Accident in Crystal River

A Citrus County Fire Rescue training captain died Thursday night after an off-duty boating incident in Crystal River, authorities said.

The department said Michael Fletcher, 42, died after the July 4 boating incident. They have not released details about what happened, but the Citrus County Sheriff's Office has increased law enforcement presence on the water near Channel Marker 20.

Sheriff's Department divers responded to the area and boaters were advised to use extreme caution if in the vicinity.

CCFR officials said Fletcher served six years with the department and about 20 years with the Marion County Fire Department. They said he was an outstanding leader in training CCFR firefighters.

“Captain Michael Fletcher was a pillar of our department, known for his dedication and compassion,” said Citrus County Fire Chief Craig Stevens. “His loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.”

Citrus County Administrator Steve Howard also released a statement on Fletcher's death, saying in part, “I extend my deepest condolences to Captain Fletcher's family and every member of the Citrus County Fire Department on the loss of a brother.”
