Cincinnati Police Shoot, Kill Suspect After Stabbing Him Near Music Hall

A man was fatally shot by police outside Music Hall in Over-the-Rhine Thursday evening, Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge told media at a conference.

The shooting prompted the city of Cincinnati to to tweet that an “emergency” was occurring near the Music Hall at 7:21 p.m. Police therefore closed part of Elm Street.

Police have not released the identity of the man killed. He was the suspect in a stabbing in District 3, which serves Cincinnati's West Side neighborhoods, Theetge said.

Police received a description of the suspect's vehicle earlier Thursday and tracked it from District 3 to Elm Street, across from the Music Hall, where the opera “La Traviata” was beginning its opening night.

The suspect got out of his vehicle and pulled out a firearm, Theetge said. Police asked the suspect to drop his firearm. When he did not, police shot him.

A witness, FD Harper, was on his way to a bluegrass concert in Over-the-Rhine when he saw the shooting unfold. He shared a video with The Enquirer in which police can be seen telling the suspect to “drop the gun.” It’s unclear from the video whether he dropped the gun before an officer shot him, which was followed by multiple gunshots.

Theetge said she did not know how many officers shot the individual. Witnesses reported hearing at least five gunshots.

The suspect's car sat for hours on Elm Street, just south of Music Hall, with two flat tires, an Enquirer reporter said.

The stabbing victim, who has not been named, remains in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Theetge said.

The stabbing incident was domestic in nature, Theetge said, but the relationship between the suspect and victim is currently unclear.

At 7:36 p.m., the city of Cincinnati has issued an “all clear” alert, and wrote in a tweet: “Regarding the police incident near the Music Hall, there is no ongoing threat to [the] community. Normal activities can resume.”

The opera, which was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., continued as normal. No witnesses were injured, police said.

Elm Street remains blocked between 13th and 14th streets, directly across from the Music Hall, according to an Enquirer reporter at the scene.

This is a developing story and The Enquirer will continue to update it.
