Cicero shooting: Sebastian Rodriguez, employee of the Portrillo Liquors store, shot and killed during a robbery; 2 people in police custody, according to authorities

CICERO, Ill. (WLS) — A man who worked at a west suburban liquor store was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon.

The 23-year-old victim was shot after confronting two male suspects who allegedly tried to steal a bottle of alcohol, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at Portrillo Liquors, 2126 S. Cicero Ave. One of the suspects fired a single shot at the victim during the robbery, a Cicero spokesperson told ABC7.

The victim was identified as Sebastian Rodriguez, 23, by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. He died of a gunshot to the head.

His co-workers and friends gathered outside the liquor store Wednesday afternoon as a small candle memorial grew. They told ABC7 that Rodriguez was a warm, friendly man who was devoted to his family.

A colleague, Norma Barito, said she last spoke to the young man on Sunday.

“He was very nice,” Barito said. “He was always with people, you know, friendly. He never had any problems with anyone. The sad thing is he was only 23… a young age. He still has still a lot of life ahead of him, you know, but we “We are in a world where there is no more humanity.”

The two people involved in the shooting were taken into custody after police identified a wanted vehicle, investigators said. Their ages were not immediately known.

Video recorded on a cellphone showed the moments police apprehended the two people.

It was not immediately clear what charges the two persons of interest might face.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting.

No further information from Cicero police was immediately available.
