CHP: Porsche driver ticketed for going 133 mph on highway. 101 near Healdsburg

A Porsche driver near Healdsburg was ticketed by the California Highway Patrol over Memorial Day weekend for allegedly reaching speeds of up to 130 mph on Highway 101, and people interviewed on Facebook had many suggestions for getting speedy justice.

Jail the driver. Impound the car. Suspend driving license.

The ticket was issued on May 26, a Sunday morning, on northbound Highway 101 in Lytton Springs, near Healdsburg.

The posted speed limit is 65 miles per hour.

The CHP Santa Rosa division posted images of portions of the ticket on Facebook to warn that the agency was being extra vigilant over the holiday weekend.

“Omg please tell me you towed that vehicle!!” commented a reader of the Facebook post.

“No prison? Wow!” » replied another reader.

But David Derutte, CHP public information officer, confirmed the driver was not arrested and the vehicle was not impounded. He did not reveal the fine the driver faced.

“That kind of speed, going that fast, it’s quite rare but we see it, for sure,” he said. “I guess that’s the fastest this officer has seen.”

The CHP's Facebook post showed parts of the ticket. The offense for drivers exceeding 100 mph opens the individual to a wide range of penalties.

A first-time offender can be fined up to $500, with the court potentially suspending their driving privileges for up to 30 days. Drivers with previous speeding offenses face higher fines and longer suspensions.

The driver was arrested during one of the CHP's “peak enforcement periods,” or holiday periods during which the department increases vehicle patrols.

“We have a handful of weekends, like July 4, Labor Day, Christmas and Thanksgiving, where there are a lot more of us,” Derutte said.

The arresting officer used a handheld LIDAR, or Light and Detection Ranging, device to track the driver.

LIDAR projects a beam onto an object and measures the distance traveled over time, according to the Department of Justice.
