CHP investigating fatal crash on I-80 near Hercules

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal vehicle crash that occurred Friday morning on I-80 near Hercules.

According to CHP, early this morning, June 21, 2024, CHP Contra Costa was notified of a crash on westbound I-80 just east of Willow Avenue. Our preliminary investigation indicates that a Silver Chrysler 300 driven by an adult male was westbound on I-80 when it collided with another Chrysler 300 (Gold). The Silver 300 overturned and came to rest on its roof, blocking the lanes. Minutes later, a third vehicle, a white Mazda3 driven by an adult female, was traveling westbound on I-80 when it struck the Silver 300.

The driver of the Gold Chrysler 300 was not injured. The driver of the Mazda3 was seriously injured and was taken to hospital where she is expected to recover. The driver of the Silver Chrysler 300 was seriously injured and was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

After an initial investigation, it was determined that the driver of the silver Chrysler 300 was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. This accident remains under investigation.
