Child trafficking: Thane cops arrest Nashik mother, 8 agents for bid to sell baby | Thane News

Thane: The anti-human trafficking cell of the Thane crime branch has arrested the mother of a three-month-old girl from Nashik and eight others for trying to sell the child for Rs 5 lakh. Police officials believe the group is part of a larger group. network that operates in all cities of Maharashtra, targeting couples struggling with infertility. The operation began after senior inspector Chetna Chaudhary of the cell received information about a child trafficking network active in Thane and Nashik. Police placed a decoy – a potential buyer looking for a baby – and contacted one of the officers. The officer quickly swung into action and started searching for a newborn baby, said DCP Parag Manere. After a few days, it was found that a woman from Nashik was ready to sell her baby and the agents promised her around Rs 1.5 lakh. “The mother is separated from her husband due to financial problems and she could not bear the expenses related to the baby,” Manere told TOI. The agents forced the woman to sell her baby and told her to go to a specific location, where detectives from the anti-human trafficking unit trapped them while carrying out the deal. Police said the deal was finalized with the lure for Rs 5 lakh, of which the mother was to get Rs 1.5 lakh, a police officer said. The officer said he had not yet checked the criminal backgrounds of those arrested. “We are questioning them to find out if they played a role in similar cases of selling babies. It is likely that they could be involved in a racket that extends across cities. » Manere said police suspect a long chain of agents were involved in selling babies to childless couples, often bypassing legal adoption procedures. “The demand for babies, especially in urban areas, fuels this illegal racket, with prices ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. »
