Belagavi: The city police on Sunday cracked a trafficking case involving a one-month-old child, arresting five, including two women. It now appears that one of the accused, Abdulgafar Ladakhan, is a charlatan who runs a clinic in the town of Kittur. Taluk Health Officer Dr SS Siddannavar visited the Kittur clinic on Monday after Ladakhan's name was reported in connection with the child trafficking case. Speaking to the media, Dr Siddannavar said that Ladakhan is a charlatan. “The accused displayed his qualifications on a board outside the clinic as MBBS, and his wife Dr AFA Ladakhan as BHMS. His wife is licensed to practice homeopathic medicine. However, he has no qualifications to practice medicine because he is a charlatan. We will seize the clinic,” the officer said. When the doctors went to the clinic, it and the residence above it were closed. For technical reasons, the team returned without entering the clinic. Based on a complaint by Rajkumar Rathod, coordinator of the government child adoption center in the Belagavi district child protection unit, the police arrested the main accused, Mahadevi Bahubali Jain of Belagavi village. Neginahal in Bailhongal taluk. According to the complaint, she was involved in the illegal act of purchasing children from needy families and reselling them to wealthy families. In this case, the main accused had purchased the 30-day-old child for Rs 60,000. Posing as a child buyer, the police sealed the deal for Rs 1.4 lakh and arrested Mahadevi while she came to sell the child. Mahadevi is a nurse by profession. Based on the information provided by Mahadevi, the police arrested the Ladakhan charlatan and three others. City Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang said the police department is investigating the case from all angles. “We found out that the baby Mahadevi was trying to sell was delivered in the clinic run by Ladakhan. We collect all the details. We are also investigating whether similar cases have occurred in the past. The department has already rescued the child and further investigation is underway,” the officer said.
