Child trafficking: Desperate couples urge government to allow adoption after being convicted of buying children | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: At least six couples recently booked for purchasing babies from interstate child trafficking agents have now approached the state government asking them to adopt them. The families, including one from Dubai, wrote to senior officials.

“Out of the six, three couples even applied for adoption through legal channels by registering on the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) website. The others are meeting different state officials in search of a solution,” a source said.

In May last week, the sale of an infant in Hyderabad exposed interstate child trafficking. Local police found that the traffickers were transporting children to Telangana and AP through 'suppliers' in Delhi and Pune and selling them here to childless couples for anywhere up to Rs 8 lakh. Investigations took the Rachakonda police to Maharashtra and together the two teams arrested 26 people and rescued 24 babies from the two states.

The rescued children from Telangana were later shifted to Sishu Vihar.

“Couples regularly visit rescued children”
Sources said the couples raising the children regularly visited them at home. If they now hope to adopt the children, it may not be easy, the source said.

As per the procedure, if the police fail to trace the biological parents of the rescued children within three months, the district officials will obtain a non-traceable certificate issued by the police and issue a notice in newspapers to try again to find the parents.

“If they are still not found, the babies will be declared legally free for adoption,” the source added.
But because the adoption process is based on a national seniority list – based on when couples in India applied – there is no need for those couples to be able to adopt the children they raised .
Criminal charges must remain
Meanwhile, following the families' plea for adoption, the government sought advice from the Rachakonda police. “While the police did not raise any objection to the adoption proposal – they left it up to the child welfare department and other relevant officials – they made it clear that the couples will still face challenges. criminal charges,” said a source familiar with the developments. adding, “In future, if the biological parents are found, the police have decided to also initiate criminal cases against them for selling their babies for money through agents. »
