Child in critical condition following Fayetteville drive-by shooting

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina — A child was injured in a drive-by shooting shortly after midnight Friday.

Officers said a child was shot at a home in the 800 block of Danish Drive in Fayetteville. The child was taken to hospital and is in critical condition.

Crime scene tape surrounded several homes in the neighborhood before sunrise. The police remained on scene for more than six hours.

Police are still searching for the shooter. Neighbors who know the family said the child shot was a 7-year-old boy.

Desmond Kornegy lives nearby and said he saw a car driving slowly down the street and then heard gunshots.

“I waited a few minutes, heard the cops coming and recorded everything,” Kornegy said. “The mother was outside, of course, she was hysterical. I heard her say that her baby had been shot in the face. She was saying that people drove by and shot into the house.”

A neighbor estimated she heard more than 15 gunshots. The community is right next to the post, along the Yadkin Road entrance to Fort Liberty.

It's unclear if anyone else was shot.

Investigators are asking residents to check their doorbell and security cameras to see if they contain video that could help them locate a suspect.
