Child, adult in fatal crash with pedestrian near Mamaroneck Ave school

An adult and a child were struck while crossing the street near the elementary school. Police have confirmed that one of the victims has died.

MAMARONECK, NY — A child and an adult were struck while crossing the street near Mamaroneck Avenue School, an elementary school, this morning, just days before the end of the school year.

The tragic pedestrian accident happened around 9 a.m. on Mamaroneck Avenue near New Street, according to initial reports.

“This morning there was a serious accident involving a child and an adult on Mamaroneck Avenue,” Mamaroneck Schools Superintendent Charles Sampson wrote in a message to families. “The individuals were struck by a vehicle while walking to school and transported to a local hospital. We are working with authorities to stay informed of the situation and put in place all necessary supports for our students, staff and families. Our thoughts and hearts are with the entire MAS community.”

According to NBC News New York, the victims were hit by a school bus. Aerial footage from the crash investigation released by the station shows a yellow bus surrounded by police tape. Mamaroneck Village Police confirmed one of the victims died at the scene.

According to other media, it was the child who was killed and the adult seriously injured. Patch has yet to confirm these reports.

As of 11:30 a.m., Mamaroneck Avenue remains closed between N. Barry Avenue Extension and Jefferson Avenue Extension due to the crash investigation. Police are asking drivers to find alternative routes.

According to Sigalert, traffic has backed up beyond the I-95/New England Thruway as the traffic investigation continues.
