Chiefs fan describes heartbreaking moment he attacked suspect after parade shooting

A man at the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl parade described the heartbreaking moment he tackled a man suspected of being involved in the deadly shooting that erupted midway through the celebration Wednesday.

Paul Contreras told media he was at the parade with his daughter near Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., when he heard someone yelling to stop a man and attack him as the crowd erupted in chaos. At least one person was killed and 22 others were injured in the shooting.

” You do not belive it. It’s just a reaction,” Contreras, a resident of Omaha, Nebraska, said in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett. “He came closer to me, I had the right angle on him. And when I hit him from behind, I either knocked the gun out of his hand or out of his sleeve. …I see the gun on the ground.

“I put all my weight on him and another good Samaritan comes along,” he said. “We just put our weight on him, and he just fights to get up, but we fight to keep him down.”

Video From the scene appears to show Contreras running toward the suspect and attacking him before police arrive. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said during a news conference Wednesday that she was aware of the video of bystanders tackling a suspect, but could not yet confirm that the person arrested was one of three people arrested by the police.

Authorities said they had three suspects in custody following the shooting and recovered at least one gun at the scene.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said more than 800 police officers were on hand to watch Wednesday's parade, but added that the shooting shows the difficulty officials have in keeping the public safe when gunfire can “disrupt anything” in seconds.

“I mean, that’s what happens with guns,” Lucas said at the news conference. “We had security in many locations, with eyes on the buildings and beyond. And there is always a risk for people. And I think that's something that all of us, parents, ordinary people living every day, have to decide what we want to do about it.

“Parades, rallies, schools, films: it seems that almost nothing is certain. »
