Chicago Union Station stabbing victim outside hospital, suspect in jail

CHICAGO (CBS) – The man accused of stabbing a woman walking her dog Wednesday outside Chicago's Union Station will remain in prison.

Wilson Barreno, 25, was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery in connection with with the stab of Arlene Rado, 71, as she and her dog, Mickey, walked on the sidewalk outside the station. Her husband said Barreno grabbed Rado by the neck from behind and stabbed her several times in the neck and back.

Barreno then fled but was found by a good Samaritan. He made his first court appearance Friday and was being held in jail without bail.

The motive for this attack was unknown Friday. Barreno had arrived in Chicago from California earlier this week. He had a train ticket to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, hours before the attack.

Alan Rado said his wife Arlene (right) was randomly stabbed Wednesday afternoon while walking their dog Mickey in front of Union Station.

Meanwhile, Rado's husband, Alan, said he was grateful she left Northwestern Memorial Hospital Friday.

“I was able to keep my cool and feel very positive because my wife is doing great,” Alan Rado said. “You know, I mean, considering what happened, she's in a really good mood.”

Alan described the entire experience his wife went through during her daily routine as “surreal” and “incredible.” He said he and his wife were reconsidering how different their routines of nearly 20 years would be after the attack.

“The other day we were talking about walking around the neighborhood and she said, 'You're going to have to take a walk with me. So maybe I don't want to walk alone,'” Alan said.

He added that it was “totally unbelievable” how random and unexpected the attack was, especially since the suspect never demanded his wife's money or belongings.
