CHICAGO (WLS) — A 25-year-old man from Oakland, California, was charged with a stabbing outside Union Station Wednesday afternoon, Chicago police said.

Wilson Barreno is charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury and one count of aggravated battery using a deadly weapon in the attack against Arlene Rado, 71, around 1:30 p.m. yesterday. These are all criminal charges.

Rado's husband, Alan, told ABC7 that she was walking her dog Mickey when she was caught off guard by her attacker. Police said Barreno was the man who stabbed her with a “sharp object” and then fled. The police found him and took him into custody.

“I said, 'Are you okay?' She said: 'I was stabbed!' You were stabbed?' Alan Rado said after the attack.

The woman's husband said she initially thought she was being punched in the back, then realized she was being stabbed. He said a nearby pedestrian saw the incident and rushed to help, going so far as to open his suitcase and use his own clothes to help stop the bleeding.

“She said, 'Someone put his arm around me and I thought he was hitting me in the back and neck, then I realized there was blood on the sidewalk and “It was mine, then I realized I was being stabbed.” Alan said.

Rado was taken to Northwestern Medical Center in critical condition. Her husband said she was in surgery and, from what he was told, expected her to be fine. He said they lived a few blocks from Union Station.

Police said they were able to recover a sharp object at the scene and the attack appeared to be random.

“It appears he dropped the knife and left, so there was no conversation,” Alan said. “There was nothing.”

Cellphone video captured the moment police captured the alleged attacker with the help of good Samaritans. One told ABC7 that he and another man chased the suspect and cornered him in a nearby parking lot.

Barreno is scheduled to appear in court Friday for a detention hearing.
