Three women and a man were standing near the sidewalk outside a liquor store when they were shot, police said. Someone in an unknown vehicle approached and shot the victims.

They were all transported to hospitals with life-threatening injuries, the Chicago Fire Department said.

Two women, aged 22 and 23, were both shot in the leg and taken to Christ Hospital. The other two victims, a 29-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with gunshot wounds, police said.

Investigators paced the bullet-strewn intersection, dropping marker after marker on spent shell casings. There were almost 30 of them.

The sound of each shot was unmistakable to those nearby.

“More than 15 shots immediately…constantly,” said resident Jesus Quiroga.

It is unclear whether or not the bullets hit who they were intended for. A woman named Jasmine nearby rushed to the area after receiving a panicked phone call from a friend.

“I really don't know what happened. I just know my friend was shot in the leg,” Jasmine said. “It’s sad…I hope this is a wake-up call for everyone to stay away from this. [liquor] store. This is not a place you should try to stop, especially not with children…having fun.”
