A 22-year-old woman was shot three times in the chest and taken to Insight Hospital, where she later died.

Authorities have not released his identity, but his mother spoke Thursday.

“None of this feels real. I feel like I'm sleeping and I'm just waiting to wake up,” Leontyne Walker said.

A 20-year-old woman was shot in the thigh and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Officers were seen arresting one person, but police said they had no one in custody.

Detectives were seen searching the scene for evidence and reviewing surveillance video.

On Thursday morning, the mayor expressed outrage and sadness over the summer violence, saying he had inherited a disorder.

“When you see the work that we do, what I can say emphatically is that we did not create the mess that we found ourselves in,” Johnson said. “My administration did not do that: it closed public schools, closed public housing, the city was destroyed, its finances increased, and it found itself in chaos and disorder.”

Walker said she lost her two only sons in a car accident nearly three years ago.

She's feeling the same pain again, after her only daughter, Zakhyiah Cobbs, was shot and killed Wednesday night.

“I had to bury my two sons, and now I have to turn around and bury my daughter,” Walker said. “How are you going to move on?” »

Cobbs was Walker's last surviving child.

“It was already hard living here, having to walk past my boys' room, but now to have to walk past all three of their bedrooms. It's just indescribable,” Walker said.

Cobbs' family said the 22-year-old was out with her friends Wednesday night when she was shot.

“You all took my niece. My sister has no children!” said Cobbs' aunt, Nedra Walker.

Nearly three years ago, Cobbs' two teenage brothers died in a car accident in Hickory Hills in July 2021.

Their mother then spoke of her grief.

“I know it’s hard when people have to bury one child, but bury two at the same time,” Walker said at the time.

Years later, she is preparing to bury another.

“She was the reason I was able to stay sane after losing my boys,” Walker said. “She was definitely my strength. What is my purpose here? I lost my three children.”

Area One detectives are investigating. A motive is under investigation.
