Chicago crime: Shooting at 14th and Morgan near UIC kills security guard who worked at BJ Wright Court apartments

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police were at the scene of a deadly shooting early Monday morning collecting evidence, including more than a dozen shell casings in the street.

The shooting occurred in the 1400 block of South Morgan Street, directly across from the University of Illinois at Chicago athletic fields, which were deserted at the time of the crime.

The Benford security company confirmed that one of its employees, a 44-year-old security guard who worked at the BJ Wright Court Apartments, a residential complex across the street, was the apparent target.

ABC7 employee Lauro Lopez lives near the shooting and was awakened shortly after 4 a.m.

“I just heard a loud noise, gunshots, and I woke up, because it was really loud. I thought they were right inside my building,” Lopez said.

Bullets riddled several cars parked on the street near the shooting. Police said the security guard, who was shot multiple times in the torso, was pronounced dead at the scene.

They do not know exactly how many gunmen fired, or why they may have targeted the security guard. But some neighbors are worried.

“Summer is here. It's going to get out of hand, and I'm afraid of it,” said neighbor Lisa Ludwig.

Police say the gunmen fled the area in a dark-colored sedan. Neighbors say they came out quickly and loudly.

“After they finished shooting, I heard a car coming down 14th Place, heading west,” Lopez said.

Police say area three detectives are investigating, but at this point they have no one in custody.
