Chelsea strengthen attack with signing of FC Barcelona teenager Guiu

02 July (THEWILL) – Chelsea Football Club have signed 18-year-old forward Marc Guiu from FC Barcelona on a five-year contract with an option for a further year. The English Premier League club announced the acquisition on Monday, marking a significant transfer for the young Spanish talent.

Guiu, a product of Barcelona's renowned football academy, made his professional debut in October 2023, scoring a decisive goal against Athletic Bilbao just 33 seconds after coming on as a substitute. His brief spell with the Barcelona first team saw him make seven appearances and score his first UEFA Champions League goal in the group stage against Royal Antwerp.

The young forward's potential was further enhanced at the European Under-17 Championship last summer, where he finished as Spain's top scorer with four goals. That performance attracted the attention of several top clubs, with Chelsea eventually securing his services.

On signing for Chelsea, Guiu said: “It's a huge joy to sign for Chelsea and I had trouble sleeping before coming here because I was so excited. Ever since I was little, it was my dream to play in the Premier League. Now I have the opportunity to come here to Chelsea and I will work my hardest to succeed for the club.”

The acquisition is part of Chelsea's strategy of investing in young talent with high potential. The club's confidence in Guiu's abilities is evident in the length of the proposed contract, which is a testament to their long-term plans for the Spanish forward's development within their ranks.
