Pittsboro, NC – As Independence Day celebrations take place this week, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to put safety first, especially when it comes to swimming and boating. SWIMMING SAFETY

  1. Using life jackets: Make sure children and inexperienced swimmers wear life jackets.
  2. Swimming in designated areas: Swim only in designated swimming areas. These areas are supervised to ensure safety and avoid potential dangers.
  3. Always supervise children: Never leave children unattended near water. Designate a responsible adult to watch over them at all times.
  4. Learn to swim: Sign yourself and your children up for swimming lessons to build your confidence and improve your water safety skills.
  5. Avoid alcohol: Do not consume alcohol before or during swimming. Alcohol impairs judgment and coordination, increasing the risk of accidents.
  6. Stay hydrated and protect yourself from sunburn: Drink plenty of water and use sunscreen to protect against dehydration and sunburn.

NAUTICAL SAFETY

  1. Wear life jackets: Make sure everyone on board is wearing a properly fitted life jacket.
  2. Don't drink or sail: Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol is illegal and dangerous, increasing the risk of an accident.
  3. Check the equipment: Before you leave, inspect your boat to make sure all equipment is in good working order.
  4. Know the weather: Check the weather forecast before sailing. Avoid sailing in bad weather.
  5. Follow the navigation rules: Familiarize yourself with local boating laws and regulations. Always follow boating rules to avoid collisions.
  6. Have a navigation plan: Inform someone ashore of your sailing plans, including your expected return time and route.

“As we come together to celebrate our nation’s independence, let’s also commit to making our celebrations safe for everyone,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson. “Whether you’re swimming, boating, or just enjoying the festivities, remember that safety should never take a vacation. A few simple precautions can go a long way in creating lasting, happy memories. Let’s make this Fourth of July a joyous and safe occasion for all.”

In addition to these safety tips, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office will be actively patrolling land and water throughout the holiday weekend. We are committed to ensuring that all residents and visitors have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July. If you need assistance or see any unsafe behavior, please do not hesitate to contact our office immediately.
