Charlotte woman accused of filing false insurance claim

The woman said her gun was stolen and took out a false homeowner's insurance claim, the state insurance commissioner said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte woman was arrested after being accused of filing false insurance claims, N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced.

Diamon Phoenix, 22, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretenses. Both of these charges are felonies.

Special agents said Phoenix attempted to obtain money from State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. by filing a false homeowner's insurance claim, claiming his gun had been stolen.

According to arrest warrants, she filed a complaint in April.

Phoenix was arrested June 6 and released on a written promise to appear in Onslow County District Court on June 17.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers right to the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said in a statement.

His office asks the public to report insurance fraud or other “white-collar” crimes. Fighting insurance fraud is expensive, he says, and that depends on everyone.

“About 20 cents of every dollar of insurance premium goes to cover the cost of fraud. I am fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina,” Causey added.

People can report fraud anonymously by calling the North Carolina Department of Insurance Division of Criminal Investigation at 919-807-6840 or toll-free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
