Charlotte Mobile Home Park tenants protest alleged mistreatment by management

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A peaceful protest turned physical when tenants living in a Charlotte mobile home park marched in an attempt to stop predatory towing and unfair fees.

More than 100 Charlotte Hills residents gathered Monday to protest how their property is being managed. Their goal was to march on the headquarters, but before their march gained momentum, protesters encountered hostility when a business sharing the same street attempted to stop the march.

The demonstrators and workers clashed in front of the leasing management. CMPD arrived and residents turned their protest to the streets of the mobile home park where they live.

Jenny Navaro has lived in the park for nine years.

“At first, living here was actually peaceful,” Navaro said. “We haven’t had any problems.”

She says that changed when another management company took over the properties and new rules were put in place without residents being informed.

Navaro said his neighbors are fed up with what they call predatory towing and constant fines.

“The fines have become very, very consistent,” Navaro said of protesters’ main complaints to management. “I started putting boots on cars, towing cars at the same time.”

Action NC brought in volunteers from across the country to support the cause. Gastonia neighborhood residents facing similar management issues also came forward.

Protesters see strength in numbers and believe that with more abused tenants on board, the message will be strong enough to create change.
