Charles City County deputy dies of 'medical emergency' following struggle with individual

CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Charles City County Sheriff's Office deputy died Sunday of a medical emergency following an altercation between an individual, law enforcement and police. emergency medical services.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, Sergeant Floyd H. Miles, Jr. was monitoring traffic at the intersection of John Tyler Memorial Highway and Wayside Road when an individual on a moped approached his vehicle.


According to a spokesperson for the Charles City County Sheriff's Office, as the individual approached Miles' vehicle, the moped came upon the vehicle. Miles then noticed blood on the individual and asked if he was okay.

The individual then told Miles that people were chasing him and trying to kill him. According to the spokesperson, the individual would repeat this several times to Miles. The deputy then placed the individual in the back of his vehicle and called emergency medical services for further observation.

Once Charles City County Fire and EMS arrived on scene, they transferred the individual to the back of the ambulance. After several minutes, Miles returned to the back of the ambulance where the individual then became combative towards the deputy and punched him.

According to the spokesperson, after Miles was struck, a struggle ensued between the individual, law enforcement and emergency medical services. As a result of this struggle, Miles suffered a “medical emergency.”

Miles was rushed to a nearby medical center where he later died due to a medical emergency. According to the spokesperson, the individual was transported to an area hospital for examination and observation.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

According to the spokesperson, Miles was born and raised in Charles City County. He served the Sheriff's Office for 16 years and was supervisor of patrol and animal control.
