Charles City County deputy dies in the line of duty

CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) – A Charles City County deputy died Sunday after suffering a medical emergency following a struggle with an individual.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, Sergeant Floyd H. Miles, Jr. was monitoring traffic at the intersection of John Tyler Memorial Highway (Rt. 5) and Wayside Road (Rt. 607) when an individual aboard a moped approached. his vehicle. The moped fell on top of the vehicle as the subject approached it and the deputy noticed blood on the subject.

A spokesperson for the Charles City County Sheriff's Office said Miles asked if the subject was okay, to which they responded that people were chasing him and trying to kill him. The spokesperson said, “He said this several times and the deputy then placed him in the back of their vehicle and called EMS for further observation.” »

Once arrived, Charles City County Fire and EMS transferred the subject to the back of an ambulance. After several minutes, Miles went to the ambulance and the subject became combative towards him. The subject then struck Miles.

“A struggle ensued between the subject and law enforcement and EMS. As a result of this struggle, the deputy faced a medical emergency. As a result of this medical emergency, the deputy was rushed to MCV/New Kent Medical Center where he succumbed to his medical emergency,” a spokesperson said.

The Charles City County Sheriff's Office says Miles was born and raised in Charles City County, a place he truly loved.

“After graduating from Charles City County High School, he enlisted in the United States Army. Sgt. Miles returned to proudly serve the Charles City County Sheriff's Office for 16 years. He was supervisor of patrol and animal control. He had a true passion not only for the people of Charles City County, but for all people in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has consistently excelled in his field and recently graduated from the School of Animal Control. He is survived by his mother and father, his wife, his three stepsons, his brothers, his sister and his grandson,” the spokesperson said.

The subject was transported to an area hospital for examination/observation.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation.
