Chance of weekend rain in Steamboat Springs as flood warning issued for Elk River near Milner

Afternoon and evening showers are expected this weekend and early next week, following this week's string of beautiful sunny days with temperatures above 80 degrees.

In its Thursday afternoon local weather report on SnowAlarm.comMeteorologist Mike Weissbluth said the “best chance of foaming rain” will occur Saturday and Monday.

“Moisture will return to our region by Friday as a wave of shallow moisture approaches our region from the Pacific Northwest,” Weissbluth wrote. “Mostly sunny skies for much of the day will allow temperatures to climb back into the low 80s on Friday, nearly ten degrees above our average of 73 degrees Fahrenheit.”

Weissbluth said Saturday there could be showers with torrential rain from midday, with dry skies expected in the early evening.

Sunday will see weather conditions dry at first, but there is a “modest chance” of showers later in the day, followed by a “good chance” of showers on Monday.

“But it's after the weekend, so take advantage of the summer weather and I'll be back Sunday afternoon with more details on how much humidity we can expect to start the work week,” he said. Weissbluth said.

Regardless of local weather forecasts, the U.S. National Weather Service in Grand Junction this week issued a flood warning for the Elk River near Milner from Friday through Sunday.

Warm temperatures will accelerate snowmelt in the Elkhead and Park ranges over the weekend, according to the NWS. This could increase the flow of streams and streams in the upper Yampa River basin.

Predicted daily peaks are expected to exceed the National Weather Service's action step, which could result in mitigation measures if necessary. Areas that could be particularly affected include Milner and County Roads 44 and 42.

Residents are encouraged to report flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement.
