Champaign shooting leaves two injured

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Two men were injured in a shooting early Saturday morning in Champaign.

According to Champaign Police, around 1:43 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of S. Mattis Avenue after a report of a shooting with injuries. When they arrived on scene, they found a 30-year-old man from Champaign with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Medical aid was administered by police with assistance from Champaign Fire Department personnel until the victim could be transported to a local hospital. Police say he remains at that hospital in stable condition.

Shortly thereafter, the second victim, a 24-year-old man from Champaign, arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the torso. He was released after being treated for his injuries.

Police said initial investigations indicated the victims were in a commercial parking lot near the Mattis and University intersection when the men were shot. They then fled the area to try to get help.

Police say there is limited information on how the accident happened or who fired the shots.

Champaign police continue to canvas the area near the crime scene looking for witnesses and video footage that could aid the investigation. They encourage anyone in the area with outdoor surveillance camera systems to notify police.

No arrests have yet been made and the investigation continues.
