Century-old barn in Calvert County destroyed by overnight fire

SUNDERLAND, Md. – A large barn fire Thursday evening, June 6, 2024, in Sunderland is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

The fire broke out around 11:45 p.m. on Wayside Drive near Solomons Island Road N. The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department, along with 54 firefighters, responded to the one-alarm fire.

The 50′ X 100′ barn, which was approximately 100 years old, was completely destroyed. The fire was well advanced throughout the structure when it was discovered by the owners, the Farrell family.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 50 minutes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The estimated loss to the structure and contents is $100,000.

The original area was the interior of the barn. However, the preliminary causes of the fire are still under investigation.
