Cedar Park Police say body of 15-year-old swimmer found in lake

CEDAR PARK, Texas (KXAN) — The body of a 15-year-old boy was found in the lake after he was reported missing from the Twin Lakes YMCA Saturday, Cedar Park police announced on social media.

Around 4:45 p.m., CPPD responded to a 911 call about a possible drowning at the lake behind the YWCA, CPPD Lt. Justin Miller said during a press briefing.

Miller said the teen was with a group of friends swimming in the lake, who told police he began to feel distressed. Police said he drowned. It is not known whether he was wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Miller said he did not believe there were lifeguards on duty at the time of the incident.

He said several officials responded within minutes. The first officer to arrive on the scene took off all his equipment, dove into the lake and swam to where the group of children were, Miller said.

When authorities were unable to find the teen, Miller said the Williamson County Sheriff's Office dive team responded to help and was able to recover the teen's body around 7:15 p.m.

“I want to take this opportunity to express our deepest sympathies to the family. This is a horribly tragic incident. We are doing everything we can to work with the family and provide support through this horrific incident,” Miller said.

He said the community should take advantage of resources for swimming safety, use life jackets and life jackets when swimming in a lake.

The incident was still under investigation by Texas Game Wardens as of Saturday, according to police.
