Carson Sheriff Gives Tips Against Business Scams

The Carson City Sheriff's Office has received several reports and cases of citizens being scammed during fraudulent business transactions, according to a news release.

CCSO is taking this opportunity to remind the public of ways to protect themselves against fraudulent business transactions and scams:

• Use your network of friends, family and online review platforms to review contractors and others doing work on your home, business, vehicle or other property.

• Use only bonded, licensed and insured contractors and service providers. Check the credentials of door-to-door sellers

• Avoid contractors who require full payment before services are completed. Reputable service providers typically require deposits equal to 1/3 of the total cost of the service.

• Obtain detailed, written contracts or estimates before making any payments or scheduling any services.

• Contact the Better Business Bureau or the Carson City Chamber of Commerce to inquire about businesses operating in our area

“Most victims are scammed the first time they meet a scammer who uses high-pressure sales tactics or offers goods or services that are ‘too good to be true,’” the CCSO said. “Most scam victims reported that they ‘felt’ they had been scammed before they made payment. Once payment is made for a poorly performed or incomplete service, the issue typically must be resolved through civil litigation.”

“If you think something is wrong with the transaction, stop. Trust your instincts and contact the sheriff’s office if you think you’re being scammed.”

Community members who would like CCSO to make a presentation on fraud prevention can contact Sergeant Brett Bindley at [email protected].
