Carol Stream man remanded in custody for road rage-related shooting in home improvement store parking lot

A Carol Stream man accused of shooting another man in the parking lot of a home improvement store after a road rage altercation was ordered Saturday to await trial, according to the State Attorney's Office DuPage County.

Judge Susan Alvarado granted the state's request to take custody of Carlos Sanchez, 26, of the 800 block of Britton Road. He is charged with one count of aggravated battery, discharging a firearm, a class a child linked to the events that took place on Thursday.

According to the state's attorney's office, Carol Stream police were called to Lowe's Home Improvement, 400 W. Army Trail Road, around 8:15 p.m. Thursday for a report of a person with a gun and a man on the ground.

The man was apparently shot in the leg and was taken to a hospital. His condition is stable, according to a news release from the state attorney's office.

According to the release, Sanchez and the man got into a road rage incident near Army Trail and Kuhn roads and Sanchez followed the man into the Lowe's store parking lot. The two men got out of their vehicles and after a verbal and physical altercation, Sanchez is accused of shooting the man in the leg, according to the state attorney's office.

According to the press release, reports show Sanchez fled after the shooting with his six-year-old son in the vehicle. He was taken into custody a short time later at his home, authorities said. Police from Hanover Park, Winfield, Bloomingdale and Darien as well as DuPage County Forest Preserve Police and the DuPage County Sheriff's Office assisted, according to the news release.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement that the man who was shot is expected to recover. He added that road rage situations can escalate quickly and warned anyone involved in such a situation to “take a deep breath and don't let your emotions get the best of you.”

Carol Stream Police Chief Don Cummings said road rage is a serious and growing concern.

“A moment of anger can have lifelong consequences,” he said.

Sanchez's next court appearance is July 22.
