Carjacking suspect shot by Fremont officer identified

A Fremont police officer shot a subject armed with a knife on Sunday, June 16, according to authorities.

(KRON) — The Fremont Police Department has released the identity of a carjacking suspect who was shot and killed by a police officer while brandishing a knife Saturday. Sean Patrick McMahan, 31, of Fremont, was contacted by officers responding to a carjacking in the parking lot of a store in the 4400 block of Osgood Road at 9 a.m.

McMahan, police said, was armed with a knife and left the scene before officers arrived. He was found a short time later, still armed with a knife, while walking on Automall Parkway.

The policeman ordered him to stop. McMahan brandished the knife at the officer and advanced toward him, police said. Despite numerous orders to stop and the officer's movement to create distance between the two, police said the suspect continued to advance with the knife.

The officer fired his service weapon, hitting the suspect once.

Medical aid was provided and McMahan was taken to hospital. He is currently in stable condition.

The officer involved was identified by Fremont police as Jonathan Laforteza, a two-year veteran of law enforcement. Officer Laforteza has been with the Fremont Police Department for approximately a year and is assigned to patrol.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fremont Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Unit. Fremont police said they plan to release additional information, including body-worn camera footage and surveillance video from the store.

The investigation, police said, is active and ongoing.
