Car searched in El Paso after driver dies on Ameen Drive

El Paso police homicide detectives continue to search for a suspect or suspects in a black car responsible for the shooting death of a young father in a northeast neighborhood last year, officials said.

The unsolved homicide of Daniel Antonio Mergil, 27, who is survived by a wife and young daughter, was featured on Father's Day Sunday as part of El Paso's Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week .

Crime Stoppers released new security camera footage on Sunday (June 16) of a black four-door car with chrome rims suspected of being linked to the fatal shooting on Ameen Drive on April 29, 2023. The car may also have chrome door handles, according to police. added.

“This vehicle is believed to have been involved in Mergil’s murder,” said Sgt. Javier Sambrano, police liaison to Crime Stoppers, said in a video statement.

An ongoing investigation by the Crimes Against Persons Unit revealed that the shooting occurred around 3 a.m. on Ameen Drive, near a U-Haul self-storage facility off Dyer Street, a the police said.

Mergil was shot but continued driving a white Chevrolet Malibu until he hit a tree and crashed in the front yard of a home in the 5900 block of Ameen Drive, across the street from North Desert Park, police said.

Police responding to a 911 call reporting the accident found Mergil had been shot. Mergil, who resided in the northeast, died in hospital.

Crime Stoppers said investigators obtained security camera videos showing the black car allegedly used by the killer leaving the scene.
