Car fire shuts down Bourne Bridge for half an hour

Editor's note: A correction was made on June 24, 2024 to the duration of the bridge closure to traffic.

The Bourne Bridge reopened Monday after a vehicle caught fire late morning and closed traffic lanes for about half an hour, according to a Facebook post from the Bourne Police Department.

Traffic on the bridge was closed in both directions due to the fire. State police and Bourne firefighters responded to the incident, with assistance from the Bourne Police Department.

Bourne Deputy Fire Chief Joe Carrara said the fire started in the engine compartment and high wind caused the entire vehicle to catch fire quickly. Carrara said there were no injuries.

“If it had been just 100 meters from the bridge, access to get there would have been impeded, and again, you would be exposed to these other vehicles, which, you know, would have made the situation worse,” said Carrara.

Mutual Aid from Sandwich and Wareham assisted the firefighters.

Officers from the State Police Bourne Barracks responded around 9:50 a.m., according to a statement from Trooper Luis Blanco of the Massachusetts State Police Media Relations Office. The bridge was cleared and reopened at 10:20 a.m.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
